Run-D.M.C. - S/T

Released in 1984

Run-D.M.C. ushered in a new era in hip-hop and rap by taking the funky grooves of pre-existing rap and stripping the genre down to its very basics. The beats were primarily reliant on pounding drum machines and Jam Master Jay's wicked scratching rather than sampling or over-the-top production. Ironically, while this may sound like a step backwards, it was actually a huge step forward for the genre.

The twosome known as Run-D.M.C. was two of the best MCs to have ever spit rhymes over the microphone. Run and D.M.C. were able to belt out rhymes filled with strength, conviction and personality, but what was truly distinctive about their style is how well they meshed with one another. Whether they were rapping simultaneously or finishing each other's sentences in a back and forth motion, the two individuals worked as one smooth rap machine.

By today's standards there is no doubt Run-D.M.C.'s work will sound somewhat sparse, but the undeniable quality inherent in these rap classics still make them very absorbing. Fans of old school rap should not be without Run-D.M.C.'s earlier albums.
