Run-D.M.C. - Raising Hell

Released in 1986

Raising Hell saw Run-D.M.C. take their previously sparse yet effective sound and add a variety of sound elements to create a richer and more layered sound. While their attempt to do so was not a failure, unfortunately this album left me with the feeling that although it was a more than competent release, somewhere along the way the group lost a bit of its heart… that certain quality that set them leaps and bounds above other rap artists.

That being said, this was the album that broke the band into the mainstream, thanks in large part to a collaborative effort with Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith in the rap remake of Walk This Way. The inclusion of one of the 80's more recognized metal bands allowed metal fans to take better notice of this rap trio. While I don't believe Walk This Way ranks among one of Run-D.M.C.'s best tracks ever produced, it's thoroughly accomplished and entertaining.

Some of the album highlights are:

In the end Raising Hell is a fantastic rap classic that again demonstrates Run-D.M.C.'s mastery at merging two genres into one flowing sound. Despite all the praise this album deserves, I still believe King of Rock was the definitive album of their career. But such judgements are almost like choosing a favorite son or daughter… why try and choose at all when you can love all three of their 80's masterpieces the same?
