Cheech & Chong's Nice Dreams Review

Cheech and Chong's Nice Dreams was the stoner duo's third movie and although the formula hasn’t really changed since the first, neither does it get stale. Cheech and Chong are selling disguised marijuana sticks from an ice cream truck and make some good money doing so. Of course things never go smoothly for these two as they lose the money to a mental institution patient and need to recover it, all the while chased by a pair of bumbling cops. Prepare for another zany adventure…

In the late 70's the world was introduced to the pot-smoking pair of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, the two primaries responsible for creating some of comedy's most outrageous films. Nice Dreams, released in 1981, was their third film and although it wasn't quite on the same level as their debut release, it still contains plenty of classic Cheech and Chong moments that are hysterically funny.

If you're not familiar with Cheech and Chong then you should know their earlier movies were unabashedly politically incorrect stoner comedies that thumbed their nose to authority and good taste. They're not art, they might not even be intelligent, but as you're watching them you find yourself ambushed with fits of laughter as the two druggies get into all sorts of nutty situations. I have little doubt that there are people who don't appreciate their style of humor, but it's so unique that no one should knock it until they've tried it.

In Cheech and Chong's Nice Dreams the movie opens with the two stoners making good money selling disguised marijuana sticks from an ice cream truck. This proves to be extremely profitable and they prepare to take their earnings and enjoy the finer things in life, such as purchasing new guitars, private islands and nursing homes that they can dedicate to aging hippies.

One evening while celebrating their earnings at a Chinese restaurant, they cross paths with a coke-sniffing lunatic from the asylum that asks the drug-hazed Chong to cash a worthless check with their hard-earned savings.

Now the two must break into the asylum to get their cash back from the thief, but along the way they share an assortment of hilarious adventures. Some examples of this movie's high points are:

• A woman confuses Tommy Chong for Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead.
• Cheech attempts to do some weight training, but makes the mistake of allowing Chong to be his spotting partner.
• Cheech and Chong attempt to elude an angry biker that just got out of prison after they make the mistake of trying to hook up with his girlfriend.

As you can probably tell from the review, Cheech and Chong's Nice Dreams is definitely a guilty pleasure. But if you're ready to check your brain at the door I encourage you to sit back and enjoy two of history's funniest comedians in action.
