Karla DeVito - Is This A Cool World Or What?

Released in 1981

Karla DeVito is a talented singer and actress that released her debut album Is This A Cool World Or What? in 1981, a delicious slice of rock 'n' roll splashed with pop sensibilities.

Prior to initiating her solo career, Karla DeVito served as a backup singer for multiple bands, the most renowned of which was Meat Loaf on his classic album Bat out of Hell. Perhaps for this reason it comes as no surprise that slight Meatloaf influences can be detected on her album, though in no way is this influence blatantly identifiable.

Describing Karla DeVito's sound is difficult since it needs to be heard to be fully appreciated, but I'd consider it a cool hybrid of jovial bubblegum rock of the 50's and 60's, juicy 80's pop and Pat Benetar-inspired hard rock. The sound is distinctly 1980's, yet it pulls just the right amount of inspiration from decades of the past.

Some of the album highlights are:

Is This A Cool World Or What? is one of those rare albums where it's extremely difficult to choose highlights since most of the songs are so darn good. Karla DeVito's solo singing career never really took off like it should have, so this album remains rather obscure and difficult to locate today. Nevertheless, collectors will definitely want to snatch up this hidden rock gem should they come across it.

Note: This album was originally released in 1981, and then re-released in 1996. It is currently out of print again with no guarantee for a future re-release, so I recommend snatching up a used copy of either prior release if the album interests you.
