Released in 1997
Normally I try to avoid reviewing Greatest Hits compilations since complete studio albums lend a far more accurate snapshot of a performer's career during any given point in time, but I'm making an exception with The Fat Boys since their out-of-print albums are now very difficult to find. All Meat, No Filler is the only realistic way for rap fans to introduce themselves to and/or revisit this top-notch 80's rap group.
When Mark Morales, Darren Robinson and Damon Wimbley, the trio that formed The Fat Boys, released their debut album in 1984, the rap world was somewhat divided. Many praised them for their versatility and impressive talent, but because The Fat Boys took a comic approach to their rap and presentation others accused the band of being a short-lived novelty act.
Such predictions of a quick career demise were proven wrong, for the trio released five complete studio albums throughout the eighties, each successful and each filled with lighthearted party songs. On the outside these three individuals may have resembled clowns, but beyond the jolly exteriors was a wealth of talent that rivaled many of the "serious" rappers of the decade.
All Meat, No Filler is a darn good compilation as far as they go, featuring some of the standout hits such as Jail House Rap, Wipe Out, Louie Louie and even Are You Ready For Freddy, a track created for the popular A Nightmare on Elm Street horror series.
Hopefully someday re-issues of The Fat Boys original works will be offered, but until then All Meat, No Filler is an essential part of any 80's rap fan's collection.
