Anyone that recalls the E.C. horror comics of the 50's is really going to appreciate Creepshow, five tales of terror that pay homage to the controversial comics of the past. This film succeeds admirably in achieving the look of a filmed comic book with its plotlines, lighting, intermissions and overall direction. But don't think you need to be a comic fan to enjoy this series, for the fun little yarns the film offers will be of interest to most horror fans.

What happens when you take one of the most prolific horror writers of the 80's, Stephen King, and pair him with one of horror's legendary directors, George Romero? You get Creepshow, a comic-themed movie featuring five creepy vignettes that are sure to both amuse and shock you.
Like an E.C. comic or an episode of the Twilight Zone, each of the short films are creative and rather twisted morsels that inject occasional flashes of humor into the mix. I wouldn't call the stories truly terrifying, for they won't have you sitting on the edge of your seat in horror, but they are extremely fun and interesting tales.
"Father's Day" explores the dark family history of an ornery and abusive old man who met his fate at the hands of his frazzled daughter. Since then, each Father's Day the daughter revisits the events of the past… but this Father's Day will be different. One the entire family will never forget.
"The Lonesome Death of Jody Verrill" shows us what happens when a meteor lands on a farm owned by the slow-minded Jody. Although Jody harbors illusions of growing rich by selling the rare meteor, he soon finds that he had better focus on a more immediate problem: the growth of greenery and moss that spreads near any area the meteor comes in contact with. The problem? He touched it…
"Something to Tide You Over" is the most twisted of the vignettes, and by far my personal favorite. A rich entrepreneur discovers that his spouse has been cheating with another man, so he sets forth a devious and sadistic plan for revenge that includes burying both up to their necks at a beach so that the inevitable rising tide can eventually wash their lives away. But even the best-laid plans can see unexpected results, and this one is no different…
"The Crate" presents the story of a hen-pecked husband that discovers a horrifying, man-eating creature within an ancient crate at the academy. This presents the perfect opportunity to dispose of his verbally and mentally abusive wife, but can the meek fellow lure his wife to the academy and pull off his plan without a hitch?
"They're Creeping Up On You" tells us the tale of an acarophobic stockbroker that isolates himself from the filth of the germ-infested world in his spotless penthouse apartment. But one of his recent acquisitions caused the former owner to commit suicide after having lost everything, and after he receives a bitterly angry call from the deceased's wife he begins to notice cockroaches invading the sanctity of his suite…
The stories by themselves are enough to draw the viewer's interest, but the addition of many big-name stars taking part in this project really makes it a winner. You'll find the likes of Hal Holbrook, Leslie Nielsen, Ed Harris, Ted Danson and others scattered throughout the various vignettes, and each handles their role with aplomb.
I don't see how horror fans will go wrong with Creepshow; it delivers cool, creepy tales that made this one of the 80's classics of horror.
