Amazon Women On The Moon Review

Amazon Women On The Moon is the unofficial sequel to 1977's The Kentucky Fried Movie, the comedy spoof granddaddy that paved the way for countless 80's gems such as Airplane!, Top Secret! and Young Doctors in Love. Unfortunately without the comedic brilliance of the Abrahams and the Zucker brothers behind this sequel, the series of spoof vignettes range from highly amusing to sadly lacking.

Amazon Women On The Moon consists of a series of vignettes that mercilessly spoofs a wide variety of television offerings, from cheesy 50's sci-fi flicks to late-night softcore porn that you might see on Playboy Television. The layout for the flick is actually very well done; the viewer is basically watching a late-night showing of Amazon Women On The Moon, a goofy spoof on "classic" space travel/sci-fi films. Unfortunately the television station experiences technical difficulties throughout the film, so the showing is often interrupted by zany commercials and other television shows such as Bulls**t Or Not?, a spoof on the popular television show Unsolved Mystery.

Some of the better vignettes were:

A fellow named Harvey is watching Critics Corner, a movie review show. But during today's episode they have added a new segment to the show where they review the life of a normal everyday guy… and Harvey is the subject!

Harvey watches in horror as the two reviewers mercilessly critique his life in their perfect renditions of Siskel and Ebert.

The aforementioned Harvey dies of a heart attack induced by the horror of what he just saw on Critic's Corner. His family then grieves for him at his wake, but this is no normal wake or funeral home. A group of real big-name comedians of the past such as Henny Youngman perform a hilarious roast in honor of the deceased.

A young man wants to purchase a box of condoms to enjoy a night out with his girlfriend, but he's too shy and embarrassed to ask the sales clerk at the drug store for the product because he's been a family friend. Eventually the young man builds up his confidence and puts forth the request, but to his horror he's the millionth condom box buyer, and quite a televised situation ensues.

A couple of the vignettes that were decent ideas but lacked a bit in the execution were:

A mock-umentary of Playboy Television offerings. A Pethouse Pet discusses her life and nudist lifestyle, all while she walks around a bustling city, an art museum and other public places in nothing but her birthday suit. It provides plenty of full-frontal eye candy in the form of the blonde knockout, but the ball was dropped on the comedy side of things.

Bulls**t Or Not? is a documentary styled after Unsolved Mysteries, and tonight's topic is whether the notorious Jack the Ripper and the Lochness Monster are actually one and the same. The host for this show was absolutely hilarious, but the actual "mystery" was a little flat.

Then there are some that were just pure failures, such as:

The Amazon Women On The Moon spoof – although it captures a few quirks of cheap 50's sci-fi classics such as using flashlights as "laser guns," ultimately the vignette never gains momentum or injects many comedic elements.

A new mother and father are in the hospital asking to see their baby shortly after its birth, but the doctor is resistant. When his resistance fails to suppress the parent's insistence, he tries to pass off a Mister Potato Head as the baby. As the vignette proceeds we come to find out he lost the baby somewhere. While the idea might have had some potential, and the actors did well with the material they had, the material itself was sadly lacking.

There are many other vignettes included within this film, some of which are humorous (a guy gets trapped in various television shows and his wife desperately tries to get him out by hitting buttons on the remote control) and others that bomb (a hair loss commercial where rugs are stapled to clients' heads). The end result is a mixed bag; Amazon Women On The Moon is like riding a kiddie rollercoaster where you experience constant, yet controlled, ups and downs.

Amazon Women On The Moon can't hold a candle to spoof greats such as Airplane!, but if you can ride out (or fast-forward through) the failed vignettes then there is some definite fun to be had.
