80's Sci-Fi Movies

The 80's were a glorious decade for the sci-fi genre; countless science fiction entries became overnight box-office hits. Remember when Paul Verhoeven's Robocop was a graphic and violent revenge tale for adults rather than a campy sequel and cartoon? How about the television sensations that had America glued to the tube: V: The Original Mini-Series and V: The Final Battle? And of course who can forget The Terminator, the movie that solidified Arnold Schwarzenegger as one of the 80's premiere action stars?

Family-suited movies were not in any shortage either. We were able to witness the heart-warming adventure of Elliott and his extra terrestrial buddy in E.T., as well as the unique fun of Tron.

Yes, the 80's were a high point for sci-fi movies. We discovered many brilliant newcomers to the genre, experienced the splendor of the two Star Wars sequels and watched an old favorite recover from its shaky debut on the big screen (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan).

Luckily B-movie fans weren't left out of the fun; there were plenty of sci-fi offerings available for them also, such as the many post-apocalyptic films that clung to the success of Mad Max and Escape from New York (i.e., 2019: After the Fall of New York).

So whether you're looking to soar through the stars or experience devastated post-apocalyptic worlds, the 80's cinema will be sure to deliver.

Feature Films

V: The Series

V: The Entire Series

V began as an ambitious mini-series aired on NBC in 1983, and it's epic storyline quickly captured the attention of the nation. Featuring an involving storyline about alien invaders as well as an intelligence rarely seen in science fiction films, V became an instant success, spawning a second mini-series a year later as well as a 19-episode television series.

Make sure you read our review of V: The Entire Series, for there has never been another sci-fi film like it.

The Terminator

The Terminator

Who among us hasn't heard of The Terminator, the sci-fi action extravaganza that launched Arnold Schwarzenegger's acting career off the charts? Few movies remain as memorable and cherished twenty years later as this one, and for good reason. The Terminator featured an intriguing storyline and a perfect unstoppable villain in the form of Schwarzenegger, a robot from the future that was sent to the past to assassinate a young woman who will eventually be responsible for humanity's only hope... provided the robot doesn't terminate her first!
