80's Cartoons & Animated Movies

Remember when weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings were reserved for cartoons instead of vulgar talk shows, reality TV or kid-oriented sitcoms? Or how about when cartoons featured heroes that were honorable and just, rather than smart-mouthed punks little better than the villains they fight?

There's no doubt that the 80's were a heyday for cartoon goodness, full of classic hits that children of the decade will never forget. Sadly they were an art quickly forgotten in the 90's, as trashy television eventually replaced or corrupted animated cartoons. Which is too bad, for cartoons not only lost their innocence since the 80's… they also lost their magic.

We experienced the little blue creatures known as the Smurfs… and yes, nearly every red-blooded American male will vehemently deny ever watching these blue munchkins sing, prance and thwart the latest plots of the evil wizard Gargamel.

G.I. Joe? Ahhh, now there's a different story. What American boy didn't rush home from school everyday to watch the patriotic and just G.I. Joe team battle the hapless would-be terrorists known as Cobra?

Then there were the mechanical wonders known as the Transformers, the magical fun of He-Man, the Japanese-inspired robotic creations of Robotech and much, much more! Though once lost in the sands of time, many of the 80's classic cartoons are slowly being brought back on DVD so that those who grew up with them can relive their fond memories while children of today can discover the true magic of cartoons for themselves.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero

One of the most popular cartoon series among the 80's youth (at least for males) was G.I. Joe, which presented the wild adventures of a patriotic band of heroesthat protects the world from Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization.

Featuring a wide assortment of characters, plenty of action and a lovable bumbling group of would-be villains, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero is the mini-series which started the whole thing. Read our review to take a trip down memory lane, or learn about this series for the first time.
